Vision
DMCIS endorses the following principled vision of health professionals serving in disasters:
- professionalization of health personnel in disasters requires apprenticeship training, code of ethics, continuing education, and peer review;
- qualifications for health professionals are competency-based, criterion-referenced, and time-limited;
- competency is case-related--extensive field experience is fundamental to disaster expertise;
- expertise in the disaster health sector is specialty-specific, site-specific, hazard-specific, and organization-specific;
- state-of-the-art in the disaster health sector emerges from inter-disciplinary, inter-agency, and international best practices.
